The Boerboel Breed, In Depth

There is a lot written about the Boerboel, and a great deal of it is half folklore. This is our attempt at something different: a carefully researched, plainly sourced reference on the South African Mastiff — what we can actually prove, and where the record runs out.

Why we built this

We breed Boerboels, and the same questions come up again and again — where the breed comes from, what it was really used for, how healthy it is, whether the dramatic stories are true. Most answers online repeat each other without checking anything. So we’re writing the version we wish existed: long, honest, and tied to real sources you can read yourself. Each piece below stands on its own. We’re publishing them as they’re finished, starting with the breed’s history.

How we research these pages

We lean on primary and authoritative sources first — breed registries, kennel clubs, peer-reviewed studies, government records, court judgments, museums, and the handful of serious breed historians — and we treat breeder blogs and content farms as tradition to be checked, not facts to be repeated. Where good sources disagree, we say so rather than picking the prettiest version. Where the record simply runs out, we say that too.

Every factual claim in these articles is tied to a numbered source you can open and read for yourself. If you find something we got wrong, we’d genuinely like to hear it — reach us through our contact page.

Start with the breed’s true history

The South African Mastiff has a more interesting — and more honest — story than the legend.
