How Strong Is a Boerboel?

Here is the sourced version: the record, what kind of strength the breed actually has, how it stacks up against other breeds, and why strength and bite force are two different questions.
The short answer
On raw pulling power, the Boerboel is the strongest dog breed on record. Boerboels hold the heaviest documented single-dog weight pull in any federation’s published results: 22,039 lb, tied on rails in May 2026 by two littermates, CR’s Sun WuKong and CR’s Mr. Wednesday, who are both sons of our stud Peterbuilt Hakeem.[4] The next-heaviest figure any other breed has posted on the same surface is 16,146 lb, so the Boerboel mark leads by about 36 percent.
That is what the build is for. Bred as a heavy South African farm guardian, males run typically 150 to 200+ pounds of dense muscle and bone.[1, 2] The strength shows up as pulling power, carrying capacity and grip rather than speed, and Boerboels back it with advanced UKC weight-pull championship titles earned under judged conditions.[3]
Two distinctions keep this page honest. First, strength has more than one measure: the Boerboel owns the absolute question, how much weight moved, while lighter bully breeds win the separate pound-for-pound contest. Second, strength is not bite force, a separate and heavily mythologized topic where no Boerboel has ever actually been measured.[8]
What kind of strength is it?
A Boerboel’s strength is draft-and-guardian strength: low-geared pulling and pushing power from a heavy, well-muscled frame, not the sprint athleticism of lighter breeds. The breed standard describes a blocky, deep, muscular dog built to stand its ground and move weight, and that is what the body delivers.[1]
We see the two ends of that range inside our own kennel, which is a useful, honest illustration. Our stud Peterbuilt Hakeem is the athletic type: lean, fast, agile, high stamina. Our big male Marino is the other kind of strong: like a power lifter, very large and powerful, with less agility and stamina. Both are “strong,” but in different currencies, and a good breeding program knows which it is selecting for.
Proof under judged conditions: weight pull
The clearest objective evidence of Boerboel strength is competitive weight pull, a judged sport in which a harnessed dog draws a loaded cart a fixed distance. Boerboels hold UKC weight-pull championship titles, placing first in their weight classes at licensed events.[3] And they hold the heaviest documented pull in the sport: on May 9, 2026, two littermates each moved 22,039 lb on rails, one of them CR’s Mr. Wednesday, a son of our stud Peterbuilt Hakeem, at a body weight of 186 lb.[4]
It is not one freak dog. Five of the eight heaviest pulls in that federation’s entire published archive are Boerboels, including the top three, and a Boerboel named Zazza holds the heaviest figure in the European Weightpull League’s archive too.[4] When the load gets genuinely heavy, the breed that keeps moving it is this one.

Strength is not bite force
A dog being strong does not mean it has a record-breaking bite. They are different systems, one is whole-body pulling and pushing power, the other is jaw-muscle force, and conflating them is where most of the internet goes wrong. No Boerboel bite force has ever been scientifically measured, and the viral “450 PSI / 850 PSI” numbers you see are invented, contradict each other, and use the wrong unit.

Does breeding for a task make a dog stronger?
Selective breeding produces dramatic differences in size and build, but a 2025 study of 117 canid skulls across 40 breeds found that dogs are not anatomically specialized for their historic jobs; the shapes overlap far more than the breed labels suggest.[6] In plain terms: a guardian breed is powerful because it is large, heavy-boned, and well-muscled, not because it carries a unique “strength gene” other breeds lack.
That is a useful, responsible correction. It means a Boerboel’s strength is real and built into its size, but it is not magic, and it is no substitute for training, conditioning, and the everyday work of raising a large guardian dog well.
