How Long Do Boerboels Live?

Roughly 8 to 11 years. Then the part nobody else prints: that number, and every other number you will find for this breed, is an editorial estimate rather than a measurement. Here is the range we can defend, the evidence behind it, and an audit showing exactly how far the popular figures drift when you check them against breeds that have been measured.

The short answer

Expect roughly 8 to 11 years, with a realistic middle of about 9. That is an inference, not a measurement: no dataset has ever measured Boerboel life expectancy. The only published figure anywhere rests on four owner-reported dogs.[7] So anyone quoting 9 to 11 or 10 to 12 is quoting an editorial estimate, not data.[3, 4, 5]

The range is built from the breeds that were measured. In the 2024 UK life tables, the closest-built molossers to a Boerboel sit at Cane Corso 8.1 years, Mastiff 9.0, Neapolitan Mastiff 9.3 and St Bernard 9.3, against 12.5 years for dogs in general.[3, 4] A 2026 UK study of 29 giant breeds put the median age at death at 8.94 years, and at 8.42 years for the molossoid subgroup specifically.[1, 2]

Two things this page will not do. It will not refuse to give you a number, because a buyer planning a decade of their life deserves a defensible one. And it will not round that number up to make the breed look better: the honest reading of the evidence puts the Boerboel at or slightly below nine years, not above it.

Auditing the AKC estimate against measured data

Almost every Boerboel lifespan figure on the internet traces back to one place: the life-expectancy field on the AKC breed page, which reads 9-11 years.[5] That field is editorial. It is not sourced, not dated, and not derived from a dataset. The obvious question is how well those AKC fields hold up on breeds where somebody actually did the measuring, so we checked.

Ten large guardian and molosser breeds have both an AKC band and a measured median life expectancy in the Dogs Trust and McMillan 2024 life tables, which are built from 584,734 UK dogs.[3, 4] Every band below was read off the live AKC breed page on 1 August 2026; every measured figure is the median life expectancy at age 0 from the 2024 table, with its cohort size.

AKC bands retrieved 1 August 2026; each breed name links to the page it was read from.[5, 6] Measured medians and cohort sizes from the Dogs Trust 2024 table (155 breeds), the published data behind McMillan et al. 2024.[3, 4] The Presa Canario is an AKC Foundation Stock Service breed rather than a fully recognised one, and still carries a life-expectancy band.

The band misses the measured median on eight of these ten breeds, and it errs in both directions. It runs as much as 3.1 years too low, for the Dogue de Bordeaux, whose 5-8 band sits against a measured 11.1 years from 3,427 dogs. It runs as much as 1.3 years too high, for the Presa Canario, whose 9-11 band sits against a measured 7.7. Only the Mastiff and the Saint Bernard land inside their own bands.

The sharpest version of the point. The AKC gives the Boerboel and the Presa Canario the identical 9-11 band.[5, 6] The Presa is the one of the two that has been measured, and its median life expectancy is 7.7 years, more than a year below the bottom of the band it shares with the Boerboel.[3] The AKC also lists the Presa Canario as one of the Boerboel’s five related breeds, alongside the Bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Dogue de Bordeaux and Neapolitan Mastiff, four of which the band also gets wrong.[5]

None of this makes the AKC dishonest. Breed pages are written to orient a browser, not to survive a statistical audit, and the AKC never claims otherwise. But it does mean the 9-11 figure for the Boerboel carries no evidentiary weight. It is a house style applied to a breed with no data behind it, and its track record on breeds that do have data is a coin flip with a wide spread.

What the biggest dataset says about the Boerboel’s relatives

If the Boerboel is not in the data, the defensible move is to read the neighbourhood instead of the address. Below is every molosser and large guardian breed in the Dogs Trust 2024 table, with the confidence interval, the cohort size and the number of those dogs that were actually deceased, because a median life expectancy built on a handful of deaths is a different animal from one built on a thousand.[3, 4]

The Boerboel is not in that table. Nor is it in the 584,734-dog study behind it.[3, 4] And the two breeds in it built most like a Boerboel, the Cane Corso at 8.1 years and the Presa Canario at 7.7, are the two shortest-lived breeds of the entire molosser group apart from the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, whose 5.4 years rests on only 22 deaths.

Note what the reference rows do to the picture. Dogs in general reach a median of 12.5 years, and even the whole “large breeds” category reaches 11.9.[4] Fifteen of the sixteen molossers above sit below that large-breed figure, the sole exception being the small and unstable Tibetan Mastiff row. This group is not merely large. It is short-lived for its size.

The 2026 giant-breed study, and its limits

The newest and most directly relevant evidence is O’Neill and colleagues, published on 26 June 2026 in Companion Animal Health and Genetics. It is a VetCompass study of 28,345 giant dogs across 29 breeds, drawn from 2,250,417 dogs under UK primary veterinary care, so 1.26 percent of the study population.[1]

The headline figures

  • Median age at death 8.94 years, from 1,068 recorded deaths.
  • Females 9.31 years, males 8.49 years, a statistically significant gap.
  • Breed medians ran from 4.77 years (Tibetan Mastiff) to 12.7 years (Black Russian Terrier).
  • 73.8 percent of giant dogs had at least one disorder recorded during 2019. The paper compares that with 65.8 percent for dogs of all types in an earlier VetCompass study of 2016 using the same methods, so it is a cross-study comparison rather than a same-cohort one.
  • Commonest disorders: otitis externa 8.16 percent, overweight and obesity 8.02 percent, aggression 5.56 percent (95% CI 4.88-6.24).
  • Commonest disorder groups: dermatological 15.9 percent, musculoskeletal 13.5 percent, aural 12.0 percent.
  • Commonest causes of death: neoplasia 12.4 percent, collapse 9.46 percent, heart disorder 4.12 percent.
  • Commonest giant breeds: Dogue de Bordeaux, Alaskan Malamute, Akita.
  • Median adult bodyweight of the whole giant cohort: 48.8 kg (IQR 40.4-58.0).

Inside that cohort the paper splits molossoid from non-molossoid breeds, and the split matters here: molossoid giants died at a median of 8.42 years against 9.97 for non-molossoid giants, a statistically significant difference.[2] A Boerboel is a molossoid guardian by build, so 8.42 is the more relevant of the two numbers.

The limit, stated plainly: the Boerboel is not one of the 29 breeds. We opened Table 1 and read the full list. The word “Boerboel” does not appear anywhere in the paper.[2] The reason is procedural rather than biological: the giant-breed list was drawn up with the Royal Kennel Club, and the RKC does not recognise the Boerboel, so the breed was never eligible for inclusion however large it is.[15] Every figure above therefore describes giant breeds as a group, and none of it is a Boerboel measurement. Treat it as the best available backdrop, not as an answer.

One correction for anyone reading the secondary coverage: the paper’s Tibetan Mastiff figure is 4.77 years, a median, not the “4.8” average that news write-ups quote.[16] The difference is trivial arithmetically and important editorially, because it is the first sign that the number is being passed along rather than read.

Why two UK datasets disagree by eight years on the same breed

Here is the problem nobody writing about dog lifespan wants to touch. The Dogs Trust and McMillan 2024 table puts the Tibetan Mastiff at 13.3 years. O’Neill 2026 puts the same breed at 4.77 years.[2, 3] Both are UK datasets. Both are Royal Veterinary College adjacent. They differ by 8.5 years on one breed. If you do not understand why, you cannot safely use either number, and most pages quoting them plainly do not.

They are not measuring the same quantity. The 2024 figure is median life expectancy at age 0, derived from a life table: it models how long a puppy born today should expect to live, using the whole cohort including dogs still alive, with statistical censoring. The 2026 figure is the median age at death among dogs recorded as dying in one clinical dataset. The first is a forecast for a newborn. The second is a description of a graveyard. Those two numbers are related, but they are not interchangeable, and they respond very differently to a breed that has recently become popular: a breed with lots of young living dogs and few recorded deaths will look long-lived in one and short-lived in the other.

Then there is sample size, and this is the part that settles it. The Tibetan Mastiff figure of 4.77 years in the 2026 study rests on four recorded deaths. The Black Russian Terrier figure of 12.7 years, the longest-lived breed in that paper, rests on three.[2] And on the other side, the 2024 table’s Tibetan Mastiff estimate of 13.3 years rests on a cohort of 117 dogs of whom only 22 had died, which is precisely why that row prints an open-ended “10.9 - NA” upper confidence limit: the model could not put a ceiling on it.[3] Neither number is trustworthy. The disagreement is not a scandal, it is two unstable estimates of two different quantities being reported to three significant figures.

The way to use the pair is to look at the breeds where both are built on real numbers, and read the gap as a range rather than a contradiction:

A third dataset makes the same point from a different continent. A 2024 Australian study of 2,771 Bullmastiffs, 433 of them deceased, put median age at death at 8.5 years.[8] So the Bullmastiff reads 10.2 in the UK life table, 9.09 in the UK death cohort, and 8.5 in Australia. Three respectable datasets, three answers spanning 1.7 years, and all three sit below the 10 to 12 years the breed pages quote.

Which to trust, and for what. For a buyer asking “how long should I plan for,” the life-table figure is the right instrument, but only where the deceased count is in the hundreds or thousands. For “what actually happened to giant dogs on a vet’s books,” the death-cohort figure is the right instrument. Where a breed row is built on fewer than about fifty deaths, ignore the decimal places entirely. And where the two datasets agree, they agree on the direction: every molosser guardian with a solid deceased count sits below the all-dog median of 12.5 years, in both. The only breed that escapes is the Tibetan Mastiff, and it is the one breed neither dataset can pin down. That agreement, not either decimal, is the signal worth carrying into a decision.

The uncomfortable conclusion

We sell Boerboel puppies. It would be commercially convenient to print “10 to 12 years” and move on. The evidence does not support it, so here is the version that costs us something.

The popular figures sit above the measured median of nearly every molosser that has ever been counted. Take “10 to 12,” midpoint 11. Only three breeds in the entire molosser table reach or beat it: the Dogue de Bordeaux at 11.1, the Newfoundland at 11.0, and the Tibetan Mastiff, whose 13.3 rests on 22 deaths and a confidence interval with no estimable upper bound. Every guardian breed built like a Boerboel falls short of it. Take “12 to 14,” midpoint 13: nothing in the table reaches that except the same unstable Tibetan Mastiff row.[3]

And a Boerboel is heavier than the breeds those numbers came from. A male at the breed-standard 150 to 200 lb is 68 to 91 kg. The median adult bodyweight of the entire 28,345-dog giant cohort in the 2026 study was 48.8 kg, and the heaviest breed median in it was the Saint Bernard at 65.1 kg.[1, 2] A typical Boerboel male is heavier than the heaviest giant breed median in the largest giant-breed study that exists. Since body mass is the variable driving the whole size penalty, that is not a comfortable place to sit.

One honest caveat on that comparison: 150 to 200 lb is a breed-standard figure, while 48.8 kg is a measured clinical median, and measured weights typically run below standard figures. The gap is real but probably smaller than the raw numbers suggest. It does not change the direction.

So: there is no defensible reason to expect a Boerboel to beat about nine years, and good reason to expect it to sit at or below that. Our 8 to 11 range brackets the measured molosser cluster, sits below both the all-dog median of 12.5 and the large-breed median of 11.9, and is consistent with the giant-cohort median age at death of 8.94 and the molossoid figure of 8.42.[1, 2, 3, 4] The only published Boerboel number in existence, 7.72 years from four owner-reported dogs, sits at the bottom edge of it.[7]

For completeness on that one published figure, because it is worth seeing how thin it is: the 2021 mastiff survey collected 1,036 deceased dogs worldwide and four of them were Boerboels. Their mean age at death was 7.72 years, the youngest of any breed in the survey. Broken out by owner type, two of the four averaged 4.50 years and the other two averaged 10.0.[7] That is not a life expectancy. It is four dogs. We report it because it exists and because pretending it does not would be the same sin we are calling out.

Why giant dogs die younger

Across mammal species, bigger animals live longer. Within a species, the opposite holds, and the domestic dog is the extreme case: breeds vary in body size by almost two orders of magnitude and in life expectancy by a factor of two.[9] The question is which part of the life course the size penalty is paid in, and a 2013 analysis answered it.

Kraus, Pavard and Promislow fitted mortality hazard models to death records from 74 breeds, roughly 56,000 dogs, and separated the possibilities: higher puppy mortality, an earlier onset of senescence, a higher baseline risk, or a faster rate of ageing.[9, 10] The answer was the last one. In their own words, large dogs die young mainly because they age quickly.[9] The authors put the cost at roughly one month of life expectancy for every 2 kg of adult body mass.[10]

That distinction is not academic. If large dogs simply started closer to the end, you could imagine buying the difference back with good care. Because the clock itself runs faster, a Boerboel is not a Labrador with a shorter runway; it is a dog on a different schedule. A seven-year-old Boerboel is not a middle-aged dog.

The proposed mechanism is the IGF1 growth pathway, the same axis that sets body size in the first place. A 2025 review of the size and lifespan literature places IGF1 at the centre of the relationship: the small-size IGF1 variants track both smaller bodies and longer lives, and circulating IGF-1 concentrations track body weight and its age-related decline.[11] Selecting for mass and selecting for a faster ageing clock are, at the level of the gene, closer to the same act than breeders would like.

A correction to our own health page

Our Boerboel health page says the breed is “too uncommon to appear in veterinary datasets.” That is broader than the evidence supports, and we are correcting it here rather than quietly editing it.

The accurate statement is narrower and, as it happens, stronger: the Boerboel is absent from every published longevity table, not from veterinary epidemiology. It is missing from the Dogs Trust 155-breed table, from the 584,734-dog study behind it, and from Table 1 of the 2026 giant-breed study.[2, 3, 4] But when a dataset does include the breed, it produces perfectly stable breed-level estimates.

The example that proves it. Engdahl and colleagues analysed Swedish Agria insurance records from 2011 to 2016, over 1.7 million dog-years at risk across 181 breeds. The Boerboel came out with the highest relative risk of cruciate ligament rupture of all 181 breeds, 11.0 (95% CI 5.84-18.8).[14] That is a specific, published, confidence-bounded Boerboel figure. The breed is visible to veterinary science. It is longevity tables specifically, which need a large cohort followed to death, where it does not yet appear.

Where the internet’s numbers come from

Search this question and you will get three confident numbers from sources that all look authoritative. Here is what is actually behind each of them, named.

  • petnetid.com says 10 to 12 years and supports it with the sentence “according to a Boerboel life expectancy study.” There is no such study. The page names no author, no journal, no year, no sample and gives no link.[17] An invented citation is worse than no citation, because it borrows the authority of research that does not exist.
  • worldlifeexpectancy.com says 12 to 14 years, the highest figure in circulation. Its data note lists AnAge, UMICH, Max Planck, PanTHERIA, Arkive, UKC and AKC as sources, without saying which produced this number.[18] Two of the sources it names, the AKC and UKC, do not say 12 to 14; the AKC page says 9 to 11.[5]
  • akc.org, petmd.com, showsightmagazine.com and hundeo all say 9 to 11 years, and that consensus is an illusion, because it is one source counted four times. PetMD prints 9 to 11 and lists exactly one reference: the AKC Boerboel page.[5, 19] ShowSight repeats 9 to 11 in its stat block and again in its FAQ; Hundeo repeats it beside a weight of 68 to 90.7 kg.[20, 21] Four pages agreeing is not four pieces of evidence when all four are downstream of the same editorial field.

This is the same circularity we documented on Boerboel bite force, where an invented PSI figure became “common knowledge” purely by repetition. The tell is identical: many sources, one origin, and no dataset anywhere at the bottom of the chain.

What an owner can actually change

Ranked by evidence quality, not by how good it feels to read. There is one lever with serious data behind it, and then there is everything else.

1. Keep the dog lean, for its whole life

This is the best-evidenced intervention in canine longevity, and the study is a proper controlled one rather than a survey. Forty-eight Labrador Retrievers were paired, and one of each pair was fed 25 percent less than its pair-mate from eight weeks of age until death. The lean-fed dogs reached a median of 13.0 years against 11.2 for the control group, and showed the signs of hip osteoarthritis later.[12, 13] Nearly two extra years, from portion size alone.

It is also the lever giant-dog owners most often miss. In the 2026 giant-breed study, overweight and obesity was the second most commonly recorded disorder across 29 giant breeds, at 8.02 percent, behind only ear infection.[1] On a 180 lb dog, “a bit heavy” is 20 lb of extra load on joints already carrying more than any joint evolved to.

2. Everything else, in one line

Screening the parents, prophylactic gastropexy, bloat risk management, growth-rate and calcium control in puppyhood, and neuter timing all have real evidence behind them and all live on our Boerboel health page, which handles each properly instead of in a bullet.[22]

The honest frame. You cannot change the breed’s biology. A Boerboel ages on a giant-breed clock and no amount of diligence makes it a Border Collie. What you can move is roughly one to two years, and the diet-restriction evidence says most of that is on the dinner plate. That is a real prize and worth taking seriously, but it is an adjustment to the range on this page, not an escape from it.

How long do Boerboels live?

Expect roughly 8 to 11 years, with a realistic middle of about 9. That is an inference from measured data on closely related breeds, not a Boerboel measurement, because no dataset has ever measured Boerboel life expectancy. The only published Boerboel longevity figure anywhere is a mean age at death of 7.72 years from four owner-reported dogs in a 2021 mastiff survey, which is far too small a sample to be a life expectancy.

Is the 9-11 year figure for Boerboels accurate?

It is a plausible guess, but it is not data. The 9-11 figure originates in the AKC breed page's editorial life-expectancy field and is repeated by PetMD, ShowSight, Hundeo and others, several of which cite the AKC page as their source. When the same AKC field is checked against measured life expectancy on ten related breeds, it misses the measured median on eight of them, by as much as 3.1 years, and it errs in both directions. The AKC gives the Boerboel and the Presa Canario the identical 9-11 band, yet the Presa's measured median is 7.7 years.

Do female Boerboels live longer than male Boerboels?

Almost certainly yes, by roughly six to ten months. Nobody has measured it in Boerboels, but in the 2026 UK study of 29 giant breeds, females died at a median of 9.31 years against 8.49 years for males, a statistically significant gap. Across all UK dogs the same direction holds, 12.7 years for females against 12.4 for males. Sex is not a reason to choose one over the other on its own; the temperament, size and management differences matter far more.

Why do big dogs die younger than small dogs?

Because they age faster, not merely because they start closer to the finish line. A 2013 analysis of 74 breeds and roughly 56,000 dogs found that the size penalty is driven by an accelerated rate of ageing rather than higher puppy mortality or a higher baseline risk, and the authors put the cost at about one month of life expectancy for every 2 kg of adult body mass. The IGF1 growth pathway is the leading proposed mechanism: the small-size IGF1 variants track both smaller bodies and longer lives.

Do Boerboels live longer than Cane Corsos?

Probably a little, but nobody can prove it. The Cane Corso has a measured median life expectancy of 8.1 years in the 2024 UK life tables, from 202 dogs, with a wide confidence interval of 6.5 to 9.5 years. The Boerboel has no measured figure at all. Our estimate of about 9 years for the Boerboel sits slightly above the Corso's measured 8.1, but the two ranges overlap heavily, so treat any claim that one breed outlives the other as unsupported.

What can I actually do to help my Boerboel live longer?

Keep the dog lean for its entire life. That is the single best-evidenced lever in dogs: in a 48-Labrador paired feeding study, dogs fed 25 percent less than their littermates from eight weeks of age lived a median 13.0 years against 11.2 for the control group, and developed visible hip osteoarthritis later. It is not a small effect, and the 2026 giant-breed study found overweight and obesity was the second most commonly recorded disorder in giant dogs at 8.02 percent. Beyond weight, the levers are screening, gastropexy and neuter timing. You cannot change the breed's biology; you can realistically move about one to two years of it.

Has anyone ever actually measured Boerboel life expectancy?

No. The Boerboel is absent from the Dogs Trust 155-breed life expectancy table, absent from the 584,734-dog McMillan 2024 study behind it, and absent from Table 1 of the 2026 UK giant-breed study, whose breed list was drawn up with the Royal Kennel Club, which does not recognise the breed. The only published number is four owner-reported dogs averaging 7.72 years. The breed is not, however, invisible to veterinary science generally: a Swedish insurance study covering over 1.7 million dog-years produced a stable Boerboel estimate for cruciate ligament rupture risk.

No lifespan figure on this page is a Boerboel measurement, because none exists; the 8 to 11 year range is our inference from the breeds that were measured, and we have shown our working so you can disagree with it.
