The Short Answer

Houston buyers looking for a Boerboel (the South African Mastiff) don't have to buy from a photo. Our kennel in Livingston, TX is about 75 miles north of downtown Houston, roughly a 1 hour 15 minute drive up US-59/I-69, and Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is about 58 miles from us. Come out by appointment, meet the parent dogs, see their health certificates, and take your puppy home the same day. Most picks run $2,500-$5,500 with a flat $500 deposit; see our price guide and available puppies.

How Far Is the Kennel from Your Part of Houston?

Livingston sits on the US-59/I-69 corridor in Polk County, deep East Texas. If you're on the north or northeast side of the metro, the trip is under an hour; from the west and south sides it's a comfortable morning drive. These are approximate light-traffic estimates, and anyone who drives Houston knows to add a margin.

Kingwood, Humble, Spring, The Woodlands, and Conroe families have the shortest trips, and even from Katy or Pearland the drive is far shorter than hauling to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, roughly 240 miles from Houston, where some of the kennels Houston buyers find online are based. If you're elsewhere in the state, our Texas Boerboel puppies page covers the rest of it.

Visits, IAH Handoff, and Delivery into Houston

Visit the kennel by appointment. This is the option we push, because it's the one a marketplace listing can't offer. Call (713) 817-4120, pick a time, and come meet our males and females in person. You'll see the parents' size and temperament for yourself, go through their SABBS appraisal scores and health certificates, and leave with a real read on whether this breed and this kennel are right for your family. Buyers who visit before their puppy is ready often come back for pickup day; buyers who decide on visit day can take a puppy home the same afternoon if their pick is old enough to go.

Meet near IAH. Bush Intercontinental is about 58 miles from our kennel, roughly an hour's drive, which makes an airport-area handoff easy to arrange. That works for out-of-state buyers flying in to carry a puppy home in-cabin with a flight nanny, and just as well for north-Houston buyers who want a convenient midpoint.

Delivery to your door. If you can't make the drive, we'll bring the puppy to you or meet partway. Nationwide, transport typically runs$500-$1,500 depending on distance and method; a Houston-metro trip is quoted individually. The full picture of flight-nanny, ground-transport, and meet-halfway options is in our puppy shipping and delivery guide.

However the handoff happens, every puppy leaves with its vet records, its written contract and 24-month health guarantee, and a breeder who answers questions for the life of the dog.

Why Buy from a Breeder You Can Actually Visit?

Search "boerboel puppies Houston" and most of what comes back is marketplaces: aggregator sites listing puppies from breeders scattered across the country. A listing shows you photos and a price. It can't show you the sire's temperament when a stranger walks up, the dam's structure on the move, or the paperwork behind the health claims. An hour up the road, we can.

Here's what an in-person visit gets you that no listing does. You meet the actual parent dogs: our stud Black Iron Amari carries a SABBS appraisal of 86.1%, and our female Peterbuilt M3G (SABBS 84.5%) is a daughter of Klein Sandfontein Judge, the highest SABBS linear-appraised male Boerboel in the world from April 2017 to May 2024. You see the health testing, not just a sentence about it: hips and elbows (OFA or FCI), OFA advanced cardiac with echocardiogram, and Embark DNA panels, with the certificates published as downloadable PDFs on each dog's page. Publishing the documents is rare in this breed, and it means you can verify every claim before you ever get in the car. The full story of our program is on our bloodlines page.

We're also verifiable the boring way: SABBS member #0697860, NABBR #20135344, a 4.9-star Google rating you can read on our reviews page, and a public purchase contract you can read before you apply. If you're comparing kennels, our guide on how to choose a Boerboel breeder gives you the checklist we'd use ourselves, and it applies to us too. New to the breed entirely? Houston Boerboel Puppy FAQ

Can I visit your kennel before deciding on a puppy?

Yes, and we would rather you did. We schedule kennel visits by appointment at our place in Livingston, Texas, about 75 miles north of downtown Houston. You can meet the sire and dam of a litter, see their SABBS appraisal certificates and health-testing paperwork, and ask us anything, with no obligation to buy. Call (713) 817-4120 to set up a time.

Do you deliver Boerboel puppies to Houston, and how much does it cost?

Yes. Most Houston-area buyers simply drive up and pick their puppy up in Livingston, which costs nothing extra. We can also hand a puppy off near Bush Intercontinental (IAH), about 58 miles from our kennel, meet partway, or arrange delivery to your address. Nationwide our shipping runs $500-$1,500 depending on distance and method; a short Houston-metro run is quoted individually, so call (713) 817-4120 for an exact number. Our shipping guide covers every option.

How much do Boerboel puppies cost near Houston?

Most of our picks run $2,500-$5,500, with occasional specials from $2,500 and rare colors above $6,000. The deposit is a flat $500 and it applies to the purchase price. Because we are local to Houston, there is no shipping cost on top for buyers who pick up in Livingston. Our price guide breaks down what drives the range.

Can a Boerboel handle the Houston heat?

Yes, with the same common sense any large dog needs on the Gulf Coast. Our kennel sits in Polk County, in the same heat and humidity band as Houston, so every puppy we raise grows up in this climate. A short-coated Boerboel does fine with constant shade, plenty of fresh water, exercise in the early morning or evening rather than midday, and access to air conditioning during the worst of summer. What no dog handles is being left on a baking patio or in a car.

Can I keep a Boerboel in a Houston apartment?

Honestly, we do not recommend it. An adult male Boerboel weighs 150-200 lbs, and the breed does best with a securely fenced yard to patrol. On top of the space problem, most large Houston apartment complexes enforce pet weight limits and restricted-breed lists that a Boerboel will not clear. If you are set on the breed, plan for a house with a real fence; if you are in an apartment now, we would rather you wait than place a puppy into a setup that fails it.

Will a Houston HOA or my homeowners insurance be a problem for a Boerboel?

There is no Boerboel ban in Houston or its suburbs, and Texas law requires local dangerous-dog rules to be breed-neutral, so no Texas city can ban the breed outright. The rules that actually bite are private: HOA covenants, apartment leases, and homeowners-insurance breed lists vary company by company, so read yours and disclose honestly before you commit to a puppy. Our Boerboel bans, laws, and insurance guide covers the details.
