Can a Boerboel handle the Houston heat?
Yes, with the same common sense any large dog needs on the Gulf Coast. Our kennel sits in Polk County, in the same heat and humidity band as Houston, so every puppy we raise grows up in this climate. Honestly, we do not recommend it. An adult male Boerboel weighs 150-200 lbs, and the breed does best with a securely fenced yard to patrol. On top of the space problem, most large Houston apartment complexes enforce pet weight limits and restricted-breed lists that a Boerboel will not clear. If you are set on the breed, plan for a house with a real fence; if you are in an apartment now, we would rather you wait than place a puppy into a setup that fails it.
