Boerboel Temperament

Are Boerboels good family dogs? Are they aggressive? An honest answer from a breeder who lives with them.

The Short Answer

The Boerboel is loyal, intelligent, calm at home, and fiercely protective of its family. They make excellent family dogs with their own people — but they are natural guardians, not social butterflies, and they can become aggressive without proper socialization. The single biggest factor in how your Boerboel turns out is early, consistent socialization.

Are Boerboels Good Family Dogs?

Yes — with their family. Boerboels are deeply devoted to their own people and take protecting them seriously. The honest caveat is that, many times, the immediate family is as far as it goes. That intense loyalty is exactly what makes them such effective guardians, but it's also why they need structured exposure to the wider world so they can tell the difference between "normal" and an actual threat.

At home, most Boerboels are relaxed and easygoing — about as active as you are. They want to be doing what you're doing, or at least be nearby. They're very intelligent and, in our experience, train fairly easily because they're food motivated.

Are Boerboels Aggressive?

They can easily become aggressive without proper socialization. Socialize, socialize, socialize. Socialization is the single most important thing you can do to manage aggression.

The Boerboel's number one job from birth is to protect. Without enough exposure to other people, environments, and dogs/animals, that protective instinct will manifest itself well beyond just guarding you and your property. A well-socialized Boerboel is steadfast and calm and shows courage only when genuinely threatened; an under-socialized one can become reactive and unpredictable.

This is why we tell buyers the Boerboel is not a casual dog. It rewards owners who put in consistent socialization from puppyhood into adulthood and provides clear, confident leadership.

Friendliness & Getting Along With Other Dogs

With People

Some Boerboels are friendly, and most are friendlier in public than on their own property. Once they establish a boundary to protect, they take it seriously without being told to — so they're less likely to warm up to unknown people in their area. Early socialization softens this.

With Other Dogs

Most Boerboels won't get along with another large intact dog of the same sex. Opposite-sex pairings usually do fine, and pairings with smaller dogs succeed more often. Even same-sex dogs raised together can turn on one another suddenly.

Will a Boerboel protect your property and family? Yes — and if it won't, it isn't a very good Boerboel. The goal isn't to remove that instinct, but to channel it through socialization and training so it shows up only when it should.

The Right Owner for a Boerboel

Boerboels need clear, consistent leadership and an owner who establishes themselves as the pack leader. They thrive with confident, experienced owners who can commit to early and ongoing socialization and who have the space for a very large guardian breed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Boerboels good family dogs?

Are Boerboels aggressive?

They can easily become aggressive without proper socialization. A Boerboel's number one job from birth is to protect, and that instinct will manifest beyond just protecting family and property if the dog doesn't get enough exposure to other people, environments, and animals. Are Boerboels friendly?

Some Boerboels are friendly, and most are much friendlier in public than on their own property. Once they establish a boundary to protect, most take that job seriously without being told to, which makes them less likely to be friendly toward unknown people in their area. Consistent early socialization softens this instinct.

Can two Boerboels live together?

Most Boerboels won't get along with another large intact dog of the same sex. Opposite-sex pairings usually do fine, and pairings with smaller dogs have a higher success rate. Two same-sex Boerboels have a better chance if raised together, but conflict can still erupt suddenly even after years.
